Safety around snakes is important for both humans and the snakes.  Forests, woodlands, and rural areas are a snake’s natural environment and, as such, people should be aware and careful while enjoying or working in the outdoors. Follow these best practices to protect yourself and the surrounding wildlife when out in the field:

  • Avoid walking through heavy underbrush where snakes may be present
  • Watch where you step or reach, especially if you cannot see the ground, and use caution when lifting rocks and logs
  • Wear long pants and sturdy, closed-toe footwear
  • If you encounter a snake, allow the snake to retreat
  • Do not handle a snake – even dead snakes can still bite
